Conference Word, Body and Music

Date: December 7, 2017
Venue: Music Museum
Poster | Program

Portuguese version

Music seems connected to a body that resonates while producing it. While music is a performative art that embodies itself in a total, immediate, non-discursive experience, words and descriptions apparently refer to this experience from another level. What kind of body do we find, for example, in a book on musical performance technique, in Erik Satie’s indications on his musical scores, in a piano composition written for the left hand, or in Proust’s descriptions of music listening experience? Starting from a series of descriptions that can be literary, philosophical, medical, or related to musical performance technique or theory, our aim is to sketch out a map of the body experience when engaged in musical listening and performance. The objective of this conference is to promote an interdisciplinary debate, hoping that ideas spread in unexpected directions.
