Portuguese version

Since the formation of the nation in the late nineteenth century, and throughout the republican and revolutionary periods, the political and cultural recognition of African heritage has been a polemic issue. The experience of blackness in Cuba was not exempt from violence and social exclusion but it was also characterized by creativity and activism. Today, when the political paradigm of the Cuban revolution is more than 50 years old and racial differences still persist, it is imperative to rethink the question of race in the context of a Global South. The revision of ethnic and cultural components historically marginalized in Cuba is an urgent duty to imagine postcolonial scenarios of emancipation in which art, literature and politics can act together.
