CILM - CITY AND (IN)SECURITY IN LITERATURE AND THE MEDIA
Ref.PTDC/CLE-LLI/110694/2009
Coordination:
 Susana Araújo

Website

Synopsis:

This is a Project funded by FCT that examines how anxieties about security have shaped current literary representations of the city both in Europe and in the US in the last two decades. Drawing on transatlantic and intermedial perspectives, Project CILM has been trying to understand if European novelists (1) have been recycling US images; (2) are creating specific portraits of (in)securities drawing from their national realities; (3) their work, in any way, reflects Europe's geopolitical context.

Current Activities:

CILM will be working on the after-life of its current funded project (2010-2014) and updating its research lines. It will publish a book entitled Fear and Fantasy in a Global World (Rodopi), an edited collection and a special issue on Cultures Of (In)Security among several articles in journals. We will conduct research into the relations of financial and creative insecurity by working on uncharted archives of APORDOC (association for documentary film). A cycle of talks will explore notions of creation and rupture from an interdisciplinary perspective. A second line of research will embrace the notion of poetics of risk by examining transatlantic texts that challenge, both, aesthetic and economic discourses.

Publications:

Project CILM’s researchers have been regularly publishing their work in academic journals and book volumes. Since the list is too long to be included here we highlight the main publications of the project, which bring together a substantial number of project CILM’s researchers.
