TRAVEL AND UTOPIA
Coordination: Lourdes Câncio Martins

A map of the world that does not include Utopia is not worth glancing at.
Oscar Wilde

Synopsis:

This project examines the topic of utopia in contemporary literature in which travel writing is involved. The project considers and discusses the state-of-the-art problems in utopian studies and develops new lines of research on contemporary utopias. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the aesthetic, cultural, social and ideological questions raised by recent utopian discourses and develops critical understandings of travel that engage with concepts such as encounter, confrontation, culture and literature itself.
