TETRA (Teatro e Tradução): Para uma história da tradução teatral em Portugal, 1800 - 2009

Synopsis:

This project had FCT funding during the period 2008-2011 (PTDC/ELT/67491/2006) and intends to advance research in the area of theatre translation, namely the relevance of translated theatre in particular moments of the history of culture and theatre in Portugal, when theatre translation was more intense due to socio-cultural and political reasons.  The study of translation and cultural mediation is necessary in order to fill in the gap in theatre and cultural history, since it had and still has a vital role in boosting or creating culture. One of the areas identified as relevant in this context and that we intend to follow up is the relationship between censorship and theatre translation, namely during the period of the Estado Novo, especially during the last two decades of the Regime (1950-74).
